I am Marcella Detroit,
But for now, I'd like to tell you some more about me. In the early 90's, I was one half of the UK band, Shakespear's Sister. I was vocally featured on our song "Stay" which was number One for eight weeks in the UK charts, setting the record for the longest running number one for a female band in the UK and we still hold that record. It also went Gold here in the US, selling over 500k copies. Since then, I have done a few solo albums: "Jewel" on London Records in 1994; "feeler" on AAA Records/Total/BMG in 1996; "Dancing Madly Sideways" in 1999 on my own indie label [on itunes]. I got back to my blues roots for new inspiration and did an indie Blues cd in 2005 called, "The Upside of Being Down" also available on itunes. Since then, I've been enjoying writing with some very talented artists and working on new songs for myself which will be featured on my upcoming release. In 2010, I appeared on a UK TV show called, "From Pop Star To Opera Star" where I was coached by world famous vocal coaches to learn to sing opera competing against 7 other "pop stars" including Jimmy Osmond and many others. Lured in to the show by the carrot that Andrea Bocelli would be mentoring us in the Semi Finals, I had it in my mind, "It's semi finals or bust"!!! And when I make my mind up well, that's what happens. Unfortunately, Andrea Bocelli was not able to join us on the show but it served me with some great inspiration. I was given some of the most difficult arias known to any coloratura but I rose to the challenge! No, I won't be doing an opera cd, however a release of my own brand of soulful pop is about to burst from my starting gate, so stay tuned for more info coming soon.
I started out in music back in Detroit, where I'm from, and got my first big break singing with Bob Seger. Next it was on to singing and touring with Leon Russell, and following that, Eric Clapton. I toured with EC twice for a total of 5 years, all over the world and cowrote one of his biggest hits, "Lay Down Sally", as well as the cool album track, "The Core".
